Getting There & Away

By Air

To/from Amsterdam

From Amsterdam there are almost daily flights to Suriname, operated by Surinam Airways and KLM (compare prices). Martinair has stopped flying to Suriname in September 2008. Visitors from the USA are often advised to fly to Amsterdam first and then fly to Paramaribo, crossing the Atlantic Ocean for a second time! The flight from Amsterdam to Paramaribo takes about 9 hours.

To/from Paris
Air France operates almost daily flights between Paris and Cayenne, French Guyana.

To/from French Guyana
Air Frances operates a daily flight between French Guyana and Paramaribo.

To/from Guyana
Blue Wing Airlines operates a flight between Georgetown, Guyana and Paramaribo, Suriname on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Other countries
Surinam Airways (SLM) operates flights to/ from Belem (Brazil), Curaçao, Aruba, Port of Spain (Trinidad and Tobago). There are plans to restore the direct flight between Paramaribo and Miami in 2008 or 2009. At the moment however there is no direct flight between the USA and Suriname.

Insel Air flies from Curaçao to/from Paramaribo.

Overland

To/from Venezuela/Guyana
There have been a report of travellers travelling overland to Suriname from Venezuela and Guyana. Travellers have to be cautious in Guyana: violent crime is not uncommon. The Corantijn River can be crossed by ferries or small chartered boats.  From the border town of New Nickerie several busses (PN) a day leave for Paramaribo. Nickerie’s bus station is next to the market. Busses to New Nickerie (PN) leave from Paramaribo from Dr. Sofie Redmondstraat, not far from the American embassy.

To/from French Guyana
The Marowijne River can be crossed by ferries, small chartered boats and Korjalen (dug-out canoes) leaving to Albina and Galibi. From Albina there are busses and taxis to Paramaribo. The trip to Paramaribo takes about 5 hours depending of the condition of the road.

To/from Brazil
It’s almost impossible to travel directly from Suriname to Brazil overland. As far is I know this is only be done by Arowak and Akoerio Indians, who visit family members and tribe members in Brazil. It has been reported that the trip takes 14 days and the Indians call this going on holiday!

It should be possible to travel overland to Brazil from French Guyana. An asphalted road from Régina to Saint-Georges de l'Oyapock (a town by the Brazilian border) was opened in 2004, completing the road from Cayenne, French Guyana to the Brazilian border. It is now possible to drive on a fully paved road from Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni on the Surinamese border to Saint-Georges de l'Oyapock on the Brazilian border.

French Guyana

French Guyana is an overseas department of France and part of Europe. Cars have French license plates and atm’s dispense euros. Because petrol in Europe is much more expensive then in Suriname, lots of petrol is smuggled into French Guyana by dug out canoes. The border town in French Guyana is Saint-Laurent du Maronie. Carib Indians from Galibi cross the Marowijne River regularly and sell fish and other products on Saint-Laurent’s market. They have always done this and obviously for the Indians the European made borders do not exist. There have been reports though that the French government makes live more difficult for the Indians by all kind of regulations, licenses and rules.  Many Surinamese maroons live in French Guyana. They often arrived in French Guyana as refugees during the civil war (1986-1992).
